How do I define ‘swing’? Well, when the feeling of the thing is absolutely genuine and authentic to what the moment is. It’s like … It’s very difficult to define, but I’ll give you an image. The image is: If you know Thelonious Monk’s music, if you’re familiar with his history, you know that when the music was right and the band was really, really swinging, and the music was exactly the way that he wanted it to be, he would stop playing the piano and he would get up and he would dance. And that’s what swinging is for me. When you achieve this place that it’s like, it’s so good that you don’t even have to try doing it anymore. You can just be in it and just enjoy it. That’s what swinging is for me.
