Learning some tricky drum parts. Downloaded the Amazing Slow Downer iPhone app. Most useful music app I’ve bought by far. Earns its name (and its purchase price, which is a little steep for an app at $14.99). Highly recommended.
Watch Kendrick Scott and Oracle perform “Cycling Through Reality” live at the Berklee College of Music, then hear the whole concert from WBGO.
Kendrick Scott, on drums, is the bandleader. The drums come in at just over four minutes into the song. There is a lesson here.
Also, Scott begins by playing the resonant/snare side of his snare drum. (That is, he’s playing it upside down.) At around 5:35, the camera focuses in on the bass player. Scott breaks his rhythm down to the ride cymbal and then a few beats of rest, before snapping back in at full force, having flipped the snare over while off camera. He’s the David Copperfield (Scrubs, not Dickens) of drums.
I like that he explores his instrument by playing the “wrong” side (see also: Dave King), but also I think that this would be a great exercise in playing softly. Snare-side heads are as thin as they come. If you overdo it, you’re going to have to buy a new head and, honestly, when’s the last time you replaced your snare-side head? How’s that for stick-control motivation?
“I’ve been paying a lot of attention to drummers lately, and McAllister knows how to beat his kit with vicious authority. He also knows how to mix it up and follow Weiskopf’s muse, whatever that may be from moment to moment.” Criminy.
