I remember most of my drum lessons going something like this:

Sal Mineo: I’ll never get that one.

Gene Krupa: Yes, you can. Come on, let’s try it again.

Very cool video.

Today’s kit is brought to you by the letters D&B.

“Drums usually seem to tune themselves.” ~Levon Helm

“I think the drummer should sit back there and play some drums, and never mind about the tunes. Just get up there and wail behind whoever is sitting up there playing the solo. And this is what is lacking, definitely lacking in music today.” ~Buddy Rich

“I learned how to play the drums. When we were in pre-production, when we were still in LA, I had a couple of drum lessons and then some in Toronto. I got the one beat down and that was it.” ~Mary-Kate Olsen

Picked up the new drums today. Plan to steal them back from Diana some time before the next Age Sex Occupation show.

Thanks to Rob at Portland Music for all the time and assistance.

If you put a four-year-old child behind a set of drums, the child would not cross over to play the hi-hat.

Gary Chester in The New Breed, explaining why he plays with three hi-hats. It’s clever. And true—just this year I put a two-year-old behind a kit and he played everything on the left with his left hand and everything on the right with his right hand.

That said, I’m not going to play with three hi-hats. Being able to play with one hi-hat (or, at most, two) is one of the things that makes me feel more advanced than a four year old.

Found this while looking for something else. I’d seen the Buddy solo, but not Vinnie’s. A lot of fun seeing them edited together.

I’m not too proud to say that I learned of Elvin Jones just after he died, when Terry Gross played some old interviews on Fresh Air and marked his passing. I’d heard him before, of course, on Coltrane recordings, but I’m not the drummer from That Thing You Do, and my jazz knowledge doesn’t usually go beyond the name on the front of the album cover. That said, I love listening to some good jazz.

And I really love listening to a good drum solo.
